Birth of the company
The history of the company dates back to 1864, when the Austrian entrepreneur Josef Werndl founded a weapons factory in Styria. Since then, for many decades, a sight with the inscription Steyr served as the emblem of the company, which was regarded as a tribute to the city (Steyr) located in the province of Upper Austria (capital - Linz) between Vienna and Linz. It was in Steyr at the Werndl factory that the first bicycle was built in 1884 and the first tractor in 1915. The expansion of the sphere of production led to the appearance of the first car, especially since after 1918 the flow of orders for weapons decreased.
The chief designer of the first cars was Hans Ledwinka - later a legendary engineer who for a long time headed the work on the creation of designs for cars and trucks at the Czech company Tatra. In 1917, the first prototype appeared, at the beginning of the 1920s, the conveyor began to work, and cars and light trucks built on their basis began to leave the gates of the plant. Recall that at that time two more firms were engaged in the production of cars - Austro-Daimler (headed by Ferdinand Porsche, later the founder of the famous design bureau, which created many models of equipment, including tanks and the famous "Beetle") and Puch, which in 1926 merged into a single company Austro-Daimler-Puch Werke AG. And in 1934 this company merged with Steyr, which led to the creation of Austro-Daimler-Puch AG, whose engineers made a significant contribution to the global automotive industry. In 1989 this company was integrated into the structure of the German concern MAN and lost its independence.

Prior to World War II, Steyr only produced cars with gasoline engines. During the war, the plant actively replenished the Wehrmacht troops with military products and was repeatedly subjected to massive bombing. By the end of hostilities, workshops practically did not exist, and the revival of production was considered a utopia by most of the townspeople. The situation began to change towards the end of 1945, when American loans came and the company's management set the task of restoring the plant. The first products were pots, but engineers began work on creating new cars, and the emphasis was on using diesel engines on them. But life has adjusted plans. At the end of 1946, the first post-war truck with a pre-war gasoline engine was assembled, and the main task of the plant was to master the production of small, simple and reliable tractors for peasant farms. The Technical University of Graz was involved in the development of a tractor diesel engine. And soon promising test results were obtained on a single-cylinder experimental motor.

Diesel for truck
The production of the four-cylinder WD-413 diesel engine was only organized in 1948. Tractors, Steyr 380 trucks, buses and various stationary power plants were equipped with it. With a working volume of 5.3 liters and the previous cylinder dimension of 110x140 mm, several engine options were offered with a capacity of 63, 85, 90 and 95 hp, developing a maximum torque from 294 to 324 Nm. From 1948 to 1964, 360 thousand trucks and buses with this diesel engine were produced, and in 1956 they tried to boost it to 95 hp for a high-speed intercity bus using their own turbocharging system. The first pancake came out lumpy. The release of a turbocharged engine was abandoned for a long time, since the reliability and ease of maintenance of Steyr diesel engines have already brought them good fame, and a new, very difficult for those years, engine with a power of only 5 hp. big, could ruin your reputation.

Diesel trucks Steyr 380 were designed to carry 4 tons of cargo and had a layout with a cab strongly moved to the front axle. The fuel tank was located transversely in the engine compartment on the front shield. The frame elements were welded to create a lightweight and durable structure. The main gear with a gear ratio of 5.14 was complemented by a lockable interwheel differential. The front axle was equipped with Steyr oil shock absorbers, the braking system was hydraulic and booster. The torque from the diesel engine was transmitted through a single-plate clutch to a 5-speed gearbox with synchronization in the top three gears. There was no stamping equipment and press production yet, and the cab frame was a wooden structure on which steel sheets were attached. Easy access to the engine located in front of the front axle was provided by a huge convex hood opening upwards and removable sidewalls. The headlights were attached to the frame on special brackets. If in 1948 only 200 cars were assembled, then by 1953 the annual production volume reached 4 thousand trucks and buses.

Further improvement of Steyr trucks was associated with the use of only 6-cylinder diesel engines. The design of the 6-cylinder 93-horsepower diesel engine WD-613 with a working volume of 7.98 liters was developed in the early 1950s, production was prepared, but it did not come to serial production. The license for its production was bought by the Hungarian automobile plant Csepel, where the production of the Steyr 380 truck under the Csepel D350 brand was organized. At first glance, the "apolitical" decision (Hungary was a socialist country) can be explained simply: close relatives were in charge of the Steyr and Csepel firms. In total, more than 100 thousand 6-cylinder WD-613 diesel engines were manufactured in Hungary.

Avoiding wooden cabins
The Steyr 585 model served as the basis for the Steyr 680 family of machines, based on its units, but with an all-metal cabin for the first time in the company's history. Thanks to the low engine tunnel in the cabin, the cab was made three-seater, but the main design feature of this car was the ability to push the entire power unit forward along special guides for its repair and maintenance. The Steyr 680 family consisted of dozens of variants: dump trucks, tractors, fire trucks, special vans and flatbed trucks. In 1966, army off-road vehicles with 4x4 and 6x6 wheel configurations were added to them. A large number of them were purchased by the armies of Austria, Switzerland and Greece.
